Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provides basic tuition in English language to help eligible adult migrants and refugees settle successfully in Australia. Students also learn about Australian society, culture and customs. Students meet other new arrivals who may have similar experiences and goals, and have the opportunity to make new friends. SkillsPlus has delivered AMEP, which is funded by the Department of Immigration, in conjunction with Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) since 2005. Approximately 500 students have successfully graduated during this time.

AMEP helps students acquire the English language skills they need to develop opportunities for themselves and their families in the country they have chosen to make their home.

Highlights
In 2008-2009, SkillsPlus trained 200 people from 47 different countries, including China, Sudan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Sierra Leone, Russian Federation and India.

Police graduation
An invitation from the Victorian Police to attend the graduation of new recruits at the Glen Waverley academy in August was a highlight for AMEP students. The relationship between AMEP students and the police is an important one and this occasion was felt to be highly significant.

Encouragement from former student
A student from 2008 returned to talk to the class about her success in a Childcare course at Holmesglen TAFE . This has encouraged others students to pursue this area of study when they complete their hours.

Multicultural kitchen
In partnership with Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE ), SkillsPlus has recently funded our first Multicultural Community Kitchen where all students receive their Certificate II in Hospitality – Kitchen Operations. All students were from a multicultural background and more than half of them were graduates from our AMEP program.

Launching Afghan food business
As a result of meeting and learning together, three female participants from Afghanistan have gone on to form their own their own catering business. They are specialising, not surprisingly, in original Afghan cuisine and recently provided their catering services to 50 people at their local Uniting Church.
