Traineeships

What is a Traineeship?
Essentially, a Traineeship enables a person to work and earn an income, whilst obtaining nationally recognized qualifications. Training can comprise of on-the-job training, off-the-job training, or a combination of these.

Who is eligible to do a Traineeship?
There are eligibility requirements for those wanting to undertake a traineeship. You must be employed either full time or part time, be working a minimum of 15 hours per week, aged between 15 and 64 years of age and hold no prior qualifications at  Certificate III level or higher.

What do I do first in order to undertake a Traineeship?
The first thing to do is to discuss the type of Traineeship with either the Registered Training Organisation of choice, or the local Australian Apprenticeship Centre. For more information on Apprenticeship Centres, or to locate one in your local area go to the  www.nacinfo.com.au

What is an Apprenticeship Centre?
The Australian Apprenticeship Centre provides services to employers and trainees. Primarily, they will complete a training contract to engage the trainee and the employer in a traineeship. The Australian Apprenticeship Centre will also provide advice to employers regarding Commonwealth Incentives which may be made available to the employer. Registered Training Organisations are unable to provide advice on Commonwealth Incentives. For more information regarding Commonwealth Incentives, go to :
www.newapprenticeships.gov.au/employer/incentives.asp

Do I need to be employed before starting a Traineeship with SkillsPlus?
The simple answer is Yes. As traineeships are conducted on-the-job, the trainee must be employed and must have signed a training contract with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre.

There are a variety of Traineeships available to suit most employment positions. SkillsPlus offers a range of Traineeships in the fields of Retail, Hospitality, Hairdressing, Business Administration, Aged Care, Children’s Services, Transport & Distribution, Employment Services and Frontline Management. What are the timeframes to complete qualifications when undertaking a Traineeship?
All qualifications have a timeframe or maximum duration. The duration period will vary based on the level of the qualification and if the trainee is working in a full time or part time capacity. Generally speaking, the maximum timeframe is 36 months. Should trainees demonstrate competency before the maximum duration they may complete the qualifications in a reduced time (SkillsPlus will discuss this with the employer throughout the duration of the Traineeship should it be applicable).
