SkillsPlus Workplace Learning Coordinators Program
School students that are interested in apprenticeships, traineeships or work experience, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, can contact the Workplace Learning Coordinator at SkillsPlus for ideas to get them started. If you are a VCAL of VCE student in Year 10, 11 or 12, a part time work placement can give you practical skills to kick start your career.
The Workplace Learning Coordinators Program is a DEECD initiative and is in response to the Commonwealth Governments National Partnership of Youth Attainment and Transitions. The program will open up more opportunities for young people aged 15 - 19 years of age to improve their skills and workplace knowledge through ‘on the job’ experience whether it be via Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) or School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (SBAT’s). SkillsPlus will be delivering the Workplace Coordinators Program within the Frankston Mornington Peninsula LLEN geographical area which incorporates three LGA’s, City of Frankston, and the Shire of Mornington.
The objectives of the Workplace Coordinators Program are to:
• Increase the numbers of young people undertaking workplace learning placements in places of employment, with emphasis on industries that provide strong vocational outcomes;
• Increase the alignment between Vocational Education and Training (VET) provision and local industry needs; and
• Increase the number of Koorie young people undertaking workplace learning placements.
The program will contribute to:
• Improving opportunities for all the young people to undertake learning placements;
• Improving the quality of VCAL and VETiS programs through increased opportunities for young people to undertake SWL and be assessed in work based contexts;
• Developing a ‘bank’ of ongoing workplace learning placements;
• Improving the match between VET provision, effective student learning understanding of the benefits to them; and
• Improving opportunities for Koorie young people to undertake workplace learning placements by linking with existing targeted initiatives such as the Australian Employment Covenant.
The Role of the Workplace Learning Coordinator will include:
• A liaison role with industry and schools (both government and non-government) and VET and ACE providers.
• Generation of work placements expanding on the number and quality of placements currently available to young people in their region.
• Dissemination of information to all stakeholders, industry, government and non-government secondary schools.
• Promotion to industry the benefits of workplace learning.
• Providing a contact point for employers.
• Working with Koorie Transition Coordinators to increase Koorie young peoples’ access to appropriate workplace learning placements. For more information please contact
